Porn withdrawal symptoms: what's real and what to expect

Restlessness, bad sleep, a loud mind. What the research says about withdrawal, and why the itch is milder than it feels.

the short answer

Many people report restlessness, irritability, poor sleep, low mood and strong cravings in the first days or weeks after quitting porn. It's real, but usually milder and shorter than it feels: in a randomized trial, regular users who stopped for a week reported no more withdrawal or craving on average than those who carried on. Much of the discomfort comes from cues and from the belief that you're missing something, which is why understanding the loop helps more than gritting your teeth.

What people report

The most common experiences in the first days and weeks:

  • Restlessness and a hard-to-name empty feeling
  • Irritability and a short fuse
  • Trouble falling asleep, or vivid dreams
  • Low mood or flatness
  • Strong urges at familiar times and places
  • Thinking about porn a lot

Some people also describe a temporary drop in libido, often called the flatline. More on that.

What the research says

Porn withdrawal has been studied far less than withdrawal from substances. The best-designed study so far is a 2023 randomized controlled trial. Regular porn users were randomly assigned either to abstain for seven days or to carry on as usual. On average, the abstinence group didn't report more craving, low mood or withdrawal symptoms than the control group, and the result was similar for people with more problematic use.

That doesn't mean nobody struggles. People with problematic use do describe withdrawal-like discomfort, and cravings are one of the most common reasons people give for going back. Both things are true: some people feel genuinely rough for a while, and a week off porn usually doesn't produce the dramatic withdrawal often described online.

Why it can feel worse than it is

The chemical part is mild. People go a week without porn on a family trip and barely notice, because the little monster waits quietly when it expects to be fed later. What makes quitting feel hard is mostly two other things:

  • Cues. The hour, the place or the mood that used to lead to porn fires out of habit, and you feel the pull.
  • The story. If you believe you're giving up something that helped you relax or sleep, every craving feels like a loss. If you see that porn only relieved an itch it created, the same feeling becomes a sign the itch is dying.

This is the monster starving. Good.

How long it lasts

For most people the itch fades within days to a few weeks. Cues last longer, but they land softer each time you meet one without following it. The first two weeks are usually the loudest. The recovery timeline.

How to get through it

  • Meet each urge as a wave. It crests and passes within minutes. How to ride one out.
  • Protect your sleep. Phone out of the bedroom, the same bedtime, no "one more scroll".
  • Move. A walk or a workout burns off restlessness faster than anything on a screen.
  • Don't blame everything on quitting. Everyone has bad days, people who watch porn included. A bad day is a bad day, and a session wouldn't fix it.
  • Don't test yourself. One look won't settle the itch. It feeds it.

When it's more than withdrawal

If low mood is heavy, lasts more than a couple of weeks, or comes with hopelessness or thoughts of harming yourself, it isn't something to wait out. Talk to a doctor or a therapist, and if you're in danger, contact your local emergency number.

Questions people ask

Is porn withdrawal real?

Some people do feel restless, irritable or low for a while after quitting. On average, though, a randomized trial found that a week off porn didn't produce more withdrawal than carrying on, so it's usually milder than online accounts suggest.

How long does porn withdrawal last?

The itch usually fades within days to a few weeks. Cue-driven urges can last longer, but they get weaker each time you meet one without following it.

Can quitting porn cause depression?

Quitting porn doesn't cause depression, though some people feel flat or low for a short while. If low mood is persistent or severe, it may have other causes and deserves professional attention.
