How long do porn urges last?
Urges rise, crest and pass, usually within minutes. How to ride one out without arguing with it.

the short answer
A single urge usually rises, peaks and fades within minutes if you don't follow it, much like a wave. It feels endless at the crest because the urge insists it will keep growing until you act. It won't. You don't need to win an argument with it, only outlast it: name it, change rooms, breathe slowly and let it pass. Over the first weeks, urges also come less often and land softer.
An urge is a wave
An urge feels like it's building toward something you'll eventually have to give in to. That's the trick it plays. In reality an urge behaves like a wave: it rises, crests and falls away, usually within minutes, whether or not you act on it.
What keeps it going is feeding it: following the thought, opening the browser "just to check", negotiating with it. Without that, it runs out of fuel.
Why it feels endless at the top
At the crest, your brain is predicting relief, and that prediction is the urge. It comes with a story: this won't stop until you do something, it's getting worse, one look will settle it. The story is wrong in a specific way. The urge doesn't need settling. It needs a few minutes.
Two different things are usually at work. One is the itch, the restless, empty feeling of a reward system used to a supply. The other is a cue: an hour, a place or a mood that used to lead to porn, firing out of habit. Both fade when they're met without being followed.
How to ride one out
- Name it. "This is an urge. It's the little monster starving." Naming it opens a small gap between you and the feeling.
- Don't argue. You don't have to prove anything to it. Treat it like a pushy salesman: hear him out, nod, buy nothing.
- Change your state. Stand up, go into another room, step outside, splash cold water on your face. Move your body before your thumb moves.
- Breathe slowly. Long exhales. Count ten of them.
- Watch it crest. Notice where it sits in your body and how it shifts. Researchers call this urge surfing. In a study with smokers, learning it weakened the link between craving and actually smoking.
- Let it pass. When it fades, notice that it did. That's a win, and it counts.
Don't try not to think about it
Trying hard not to think about something tends to make you think about it more. In a classic experiment, people told not to think about a white bear kept thinking about it, and thought about it even more once the ban was lifted. Fighting a thought gives it attention.
What matters is which thought you have. "I can't have that" keeps the deprivation alive. "I'm free of that" turns the same reminder into relief. Early on you'll think about porn a lot. Nothing bad is happening when you do.
Why each one you outlast matters
Every time a cue fires and you don't follow it, the link between that cue and porn gets a little weaker. That's the groove filling in, and it's why urges tend to come less often and land softer over the first weeks. In a 2023 randomized trial, regular users who stopped for a week reported no more craving than people who carried on, which suggests the itch is milder than it feels in the moment.
The wave timer
rerute has a wave timer for exactly this. When an urge hits, you open it, tap what set it off, and watch an 8-bit scene while the wave passes: Odysseus tied to the mast as his ship sails past the sirens, or a bed adrift at night while the little monsters circle. Your own plan sits beside it. At 0:00 the win logs itself, and on your road the urge shows up as a stone you got past. How the road works.
Questions people ask
How long does a porn craving last?
A single craving typically peaks and starts to fade within minutes when you don't act on it. It can come back later, especially around familiar cues, but each wave you outlast tends to be a little weaker.
Why are my porn urges worse at night?
Night stacks the classic cues: tiredness, being alone, a phone in bed and nothing scheduled. Many people find most of their urges fall in one or two windows. Find your triggers.
Do porn urges ever go away completely?
They become rare and faint. Months in, many people go days without one, and when a thought does show up it passes quickly. Old cues can still fire now and then, which is why it's worth keeping your plan.
